Country music legends Keith Urban and Beccy Cole led the winner’s tally at last weekend's 40th Jayco CMAA Country Music Awards of Australia, collecting two Golden Guitars respectively.
During an unforgettable evening to celebrate the Award’s 40th anniversary, Keith proved that he is still a favourite amongst Australian audiences, taking out ‘Male Artist of the Year’ and ‘Sanity Top Selling Album of the Year’ for his album Get Closer, while Beccy won a Golden Guitar for ‘Female Artist of the Year’ for Songs & Pictures, as well as Vocal Collaboration of the Year with Kasey Chambers for their duet ‘Millionaires’.
Adam Harvey secured the night’s most prestigious award – ‘Album of the Year’ for Falling Into Place, produced by Rod McCormack.
Melbourne foursome Jetty Road took out ‘Group or Duo of the Year’, while country music’s sweetheart Catherine Britt, scored a win for ‘Single of the Year’ for her song ‘Sweet Emmylou’.

Garth wins hospital case

An Oklahoma hospital in Garth Brooks' hometown must pay $1 million to the country singer because it failed to build a women's health center in honor of his late mother.
A court ruled that the hospital must return a $500,000 donation to Brooks plus pay him $500,000 in punitive damages in Brooks' breach-of-contract lawsuit against Integris Canadian Valley Regional Hospital in Yukon. Brooks said he thought he'd reached a deal in 2005 with the hospital, but sued after learning the hospital wanted to use the money for other construction projects.

Shelton mourning dad

Blake Shelton's father has died, forcing "The Voice" star to reschedule several tour dates.
A news release says Dick Shelton died Tuesday surrounded by loved ones in Oklahoma. The elder Shelton had been in declining health.
Blake Shelton dedicated his win at last month's American Country Awards to his father, who was hospitalized with pneumonia.The country singer will miss four shows in the Dakotas and Montana this week.
Shelton will sing "America the Beautiful" with wife Miranda Lambert before the Super Bowl next month.

Merle in hospital

Country music legend Merle Haggard says he's nearly over the case of double pneumonia that has kept him in Georgia hospital for most of the last week.
Doctors found the 74-year-old had several other ailments while he was recovering in a Macon, Ga., hospital. He was diagnosed him with three stomach ulcers, eight polyps in his colon and diverticulitis of the esophagus.
Haggard checked himself out of hospital last Friday and tried to make the ride home to Redding, Calif., on his tour bus. Haggard quickly realized he wasn't up to th e trip and returned to Macon. He is now undergoing a more aggressive antibiotic treatment for pneumonia.

15 years after Opryland theme park closed to make way for a doomed Shopping centre, Music City is back on the tourist map with news of a new attraction.
Dolly Parton used her birthday to announce that her Dollywood company was teaming up with Opry owners, Gaylord,to open what would be a first in the United States: an approximately $50 million water and snow park - unnamed for now - that would be a leisure travel destination in both warm and cold months.
“This is going to be so special,” said Parton, who was joined on stage for the announcement at the Grand Ole Opry House by Gov. Bill Haslam, Nashville mayor Karl Dean and Reed, all grinning with enthusiasm.
Parton, whose birthday was Thursday, was presented a pink present on stage at least twice her size that opened up to posters of water and snow park scenes as artificial snow and bubbles rained down on the audience of politicians, local merchants and media.
Opening by the summer of 2014, the theme park would sit across Briley Parkway from the hotel, just north of Two Rivers Baptist Church.

A lot of Country music is coming over next month, but Scotland is missing outat the expense of Belfast.
Mervyn Conn's Wembley Festival returns next month, and will also bring the likes of Reba McEntire, Asleep at The Wheel, Ricky Skaggs, Lonestar and George Hamilton IV to Belfast's Odessey Arena on Feb 29th. (Top ticket prices at £70 for the one day event (compared to £98 at Wembley).
Belfast will also host it's 8th Belfast-Nashville Songwriters Festival between 22nd-26th February with Collin Raye, Nick Lowe and Nanci Griffith amongst the headliners.
Also part of the event is a CMA supported Songwriters series concert featuring Clint Black, Bill Anderson and Bob DiPiero. The CMA event will also play London & Dublin.

Hidden in the BBC Alba schedules over New year, was an hour long programme about Patsy Cline. Although "Sweet Dreams" was primarily the background to a theatre production at Glasgow's Oran Mor last year, featuring actress Gail Watson, the TV show is a pretty good Patsy Cline story in itself.

Dobie Gray drifts away

Singer-songwriter Dobie Gray, best known for his pop hit "The In Crowd" in 1965 and the country-influenced "Drift Away" in 1973, died Tuesday (Dec. 6) at his Nashville home following a lengthy illness at age 71. Although "Drift Away" was written by veteran songwriter Mentor Williams, it became Gray's signature song. It reached No. 5 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart.
Born Lawrence Brown in Brookshire, Texas, Gray recorded for Capitol Nashville during the mid '80s and charted four singles on Billboard's country songs chart. As a songwriter, his compositions were recorded by several prominent country artists, including George Jones, Tammy Wynette, Conway Twitty, Charley Pride and Don Williams.

Meanwhile, twenty-three years to the day since her husband passed away, Barbara Orbison died on Tuesday (Dec. 6) at USC Medical Center in Los Angeles. She had battled pancreatic cancer since her admission into the hospital in May. She was 60.
Born in Germany, she met rock star Roy Orbison in London where the Beatles had opened for him in an earlier U.K. tour and she later married him in Hendersonville, Tenn., in 1969. They remained together until his death, also in Hendersonville, in 1988.

Troubled Mindy found hiding son

After missing for more than three days, country music singer Mindy McCready and her young son Zander were found hiding together in a home in Heber Springs, Arkansas, Friday night.
"The child appeared to be in good condition when we found him," police reported,"He was in the closet with his mother."
The 36 yo singer, had disappeared with the 5-year-old on Tuesday, after McCready removed Zander from her father's house in Cape Coral, Florida. "I have been fighting the Florida court system to protect my son, and bring him home," she wrote in a Facebook message.
McCready, who has fought a public battle against drug addiction, does not have custody of the child – her parents do – but she does have visitation privileges.
On Wednesday, it was reported, that McCready is pregnant with twins.

Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge, Music City’s legendary honky-tonk, celebrated their 51st Birthday in downtown Nashville last week with the help from Kid Rock, The Kentucky Headhunters, The McClymonts, and The Roys. The party started at noon on November 23rd, with performances running into 1:30 am on Thanksgiving Day!

“It's cool to be celebrating their birthday party with them; I like parties and seem to excel in that type of atmosphere,” commented Kid Rock on the event.
Tootsie’s is known to have been used as a “green room” to some of the greatest Opry stars including Patsy Cline, Hank Williams and Ernest Tubb. “Tootsies is where the stars would come to wet their whistles and pick their guitars,” says Tootsie’s owner Steve Smith.

“Two years ago, we celebrated with Kris Kristofferson, Terri Clark, Randy Houser and Mel Tillis. This year, we celebrated with Kid Rock. The Tootsie’s Birthday Bash is becoming an annual event and who knows what we will plan for 2012!," adds Smith.

Paul Yandell, a noted Nashville studio guitarist who spent 25 years as Chet Atkins' sideman, died near Nashville at age 76 following a lengthy illness.
A native of Kentucky, Yandell moved to Nashville in 1955 and started his professional career recording and touring with the Louvin Brothers. After serving in the Army, he spent the 1960's performing and recording with Kitty Wells. He began working with Jerry Reed in 1970 and served as Atkins' primary sideman from 1975 until Atkins' death in 2001.

Alabama return

Alabama will reunite for more than a dozen concerts in 2012, band members Jeff Cook and Teddy Gentry confirmed in an interview. The reunion shows come after Cook, Gentry and lead vocalist Randy Owen were featured on Brad Paisley's No. 1 single, "Old Alabama".
The first scheduled date takes place Feb. 28 at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. "Alabama's agreed to do 15-20 shows next year, and possibly if that works out, we will do an overseas tour in 2013", Cook said.
The three founding members are also planning to record a new album. "We hope to put out some new music", Cook said. "We're reviewing stuff right now. We'll have some studio time to get in and hopefully come out with something better than we have ever had before".

During this years CMA Awards,on November 9th, Brad Paisley, Vince Gill and Keith Urban will pay tribute to Country Music Hall of Fame member and former CMA Entertainer of the Year Glen Campbell.
Campbell was named both CMA Entertainer and Male Vocalist of the Year in 1968, and was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2005.

Wembley returns after 20 years

After a 20-year break, Mervyn Conn's Country Music Festival returns to Wembley Arena on Sunday, February 26th, 2012. The event will also play Belfast's Odyssey arena on Wednesday 29th February, as well as Germany & Switzerland
The stellar line-up features the very best in country, roots and bluegrass music.
In a rare UK appearance, international country superstar Reba McEntire will headline the all day festival. Reba, who last performed in the UK 12 years ago, (at the memorable SECC festival) will be joined by fourteen-time Grammy Award winner Ricky Skaggs, Lonestar, Little Big Town, Narvel Felts, the "King of Cajun" Jo-El Sonnier and Texas-born George Ducas. The full line-up also features George Hamilton IV, Will Banister, Raymond Froggatt and John McNicholl, with more acts to be announced shortly.
The International Festival of Country Music ran for 23 years from 1969 to 1991 at Wembley Arena.

Rascal Flatts were asked to be members of the Grand Ole Opry this week.
Jay DeMarcus, one third of the country pop trio, was quite excited about the news. He posted on Twitter, "I am beside myself. We were asked to be members of the Grand Ole Opry tonight!!! The greatest honor ever!!! Can't believe it, am I dreaming?"
The question was popped Tuesday during their performance at the Grand Ole Opry. Vince Gill, an unexpected guest, asked the trio during their performance if they were interested in joining in what is considered perhaps the top honor in country music.

Johnnie Wright passes

Singer/songwriter Johnnie Wright has passed away at the age of 97 on Seprtember 27. Wright spent much of his career working with Jack Anglin in the popular duo Johnnie & Jack, and was also the husband of Kitty Wells. He was born in Mount Juliet, Tennessee, and first performed with Anglin in 1936.
They teamed up full-time in the 1940s and, except for the time Anglin spent overseas during the war, remained together for over two decades. In 1952, the duo and Wells were invited to join the Grand Ole Opry, where they remained for 15 years. Between 1951 and 1962, the duo released several singles on the RCA Victor Records label, including the No. 1 "(Oh Baby Mine) I Get So Lonely".
Following Anglin's death in 1963, Wright continued performing and making records. In 1964, he and his Tennessee Mountain Boys had a Top 25 hit with "Walkin', Talkin', Cryin', Barely Beatin' Broken Heart". The following year, he had success with "Hello Vietnam", a number one hit. In 1968, he and Wells recorded an autobiographical duet, "We'll Stick Together", and continued playing live shows together through the early '80s, when they left music to run a souvenir shop.

BettySoo & Doug Cox

Rising Americana stars, BettySoo and Doug Cox, who arrive in Scotland this week, have been winning widespread praise on this, their first major UK tour.
Their album,“Across The Borderline” has been picking up a lot of radio exposure and positive attention, including featured album on this week's Celtic Country programme.

As the BBC Alba coverage of this years Caithness festival is set to begin this week, the main acts for next years festival have been announced. Moe Bandy will return to Caithness, alongside Joey & Rory, who supported Alan Jackson on his recent Norwegian tour. Also coming to Halkirk are Americans sisters Moore & Moore, Johnny Rodriguez and Jerry Kilgore. Dutch band Ashville, will be joined by Mary B & Family Band from Ireland, and Glasgow born, Donegal based Lisa McHugh.
The festival is held April 6-8th. Early bird tickets @ £75 will be available shortly.

The 2011 Canadian Country Music Awards rocked Hamilton during one of the most star-studded events in Canadian country music. It was the climax to a September weekend of Country showcases, parties and seminars.
Lanark born Johnny Reid set the stage for an outstanding night of performances with this opening number, "Let’s Go Higher"; and it was clear from the start that it would be a night to remember for the 2011 nominee. With his most recent album,*A Place Called Love" already announced as the Top Selling Canadian Album of the Year, Johnny Reid went on to collect three 2011 Canadian Country Music Awards for CMT Video of the Year (Today I’m Gonna Try And Change The World), Male Artist of the Yearand the coveted Fans’ Choice Award. Earlier this year, Reid was named recipient of a special CCMA humanitarian award for his work with World Vision, the Children’s Aid Foundation and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
It was the third straight year that Reid has won the Fans’ Choice award, and the fourth year he's had the Top Selling Album. Of the three awards he collected on the night, the Tartan Army leader (that's what he calls his fan club) appeared to particularly treasure his CMT's Video of the Year award for his hit single "Today I'm Gonna Try and Change the World". During his acceptance speech, he got downright sentimental. The "one thing I know for certain is that one day I'll leave this world," he said, Scottish burr in full effect. "This song, this video is what I choose to leave behind."
The Canadian press, however, painted the night as belonging to BC native Dean Brody.
Dean took home two Awards throughout the course of the night;Single of the Year for "Trial of Life" and Album of the Year for "Trial of Life" as well. In both categories, he was up against Reid.
Terri Clark went home with Female Artist of the Year, trio Hey Romeo took Group or Duo of the Year. Chad Brownlee won his first CCMA for Rising Star.
Although Terri is no stranger to the CCMA stage, the former Fan Choice Entertainer, had a sentimental moment during her acceptance speech. "This is the first CCMA I've won that my mom hasn't been in the front row.", she cried,before lightening the tone by thanking her fans for their support, adding "You keep my dog fed".
Nova Scotia singer-songwriter Jimmy Rankin broke Corb Lund’s seven-year stranglehold on the roots category, beating out Lund, Ridley Bent, Shane Chisholm and Kirsten Jones for Roots Artist of the Year.

This week , nominees for November's 45th Annual CMA Awards were announced.
Topping the list of final nominees are four artists with five nominations each including Jason Aldean, Brad Paisley, Blake Shelton, and Taylor Swift. Right on their heels are The Band Perry and Zac Brown Band, who each received four nominations as a group while individual members Kimberly Perry (of The Band Perry), Coy Bowles and Zac Brown (of Zac Brown Band) each earned a solo nod as a songwriter.

Michelle Wright To Canadian Country Hall of Fame

The Canadian Country Music Association will induct two new members to it's Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame on Sunday night, during it's Country Music week. Recognized for her outstanding contributions to Canada's country music landscape, Michelle Wright has drawn rave reviews for her powerful voice for the last two decades. Selling nearly two million albums in North America and enjoying an international career she is the first Canadian artist in the modern era of country to have a Top Ten hit in America (Take It Like A Man, 1992) and a Number One video on CMT-USA. Michelle has performed in Scotland several times, most recently at the Caithness Festival in 2009.
Also being inducted is Bill Langstroth, the host of one of Canada's first talent showcases, "Singalong Jubilee," will have his outstanding achievements in television production celebrated in the Industry Builder category.
After their induction, Michelle and Bill will have their official plaques displayed at the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame located in Merritt, BC. They will also be acknowledged within the collections of the National Music Centre, which is to be opened in Calgary, AB in 2014.

White Horse Festival next weekend

This years White Horse CMC Festival will once again be held Aug 26/27th at Cranberry Moss Community Centre, Cambusdoon Place, Pennyburn, Kilwinning.
On Friday evening, 26th August, the club's Band of the Year "Kickin' Country", will start the week-end at 8pm until midnight. ....then on Saturday at 1pm the day will start with the fab "Wayne Stewart Duo".
The band, which was voted the 'Festival Band of 2010', namely "Rockin' Horse" will continue.
Next its time for 5-piece "Nashville Union", very ably fronted by Colin McPheat of 'Silver'-fame, and with Nigel Slater on drums. I promise you that this band is something very special.
The evening will start at 7pm with "Kickin' Country", the White Horse Band of the Year, followed by another set of "Nashville Union" and finishing at midnight with "Willie & the Poor Boys".
If last year's event is anything to go by, its going to be a great week-end again, especially if we once again get the same good weather.

The Grand Ole Opry will honor Vince Gill on his 20th anniversary as an Opry member on August 13. Emmylou Harris, Martina McBride, John Anderson , The Time Jumpers, Vince’s wife Amy Grant and his daughter, Jenny Gill, will be on hand for the celebration.
Besides celebrating 20 years in the Opry family, Vince will receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame next year. He is also scheduled to release a new song late this summer with a new album, Guitar Slinger, to follow this fall.

Tennessee Two gone

Marshall Grant, the last surviving member of Johnny Cash & The Tennessee Two, passed away Sunday, August 7 in Jonesboro, Arkansas after an aneurysm and stroke. He fell ill after rehearsing for a concert to raise funds for the restoration of Johnny Cash’s boyhood home. He was 82.
Marshall, Johnny Cash and guitarist Luther Perkins shaped the unique sound heard on songs like “I Walk the Line,” “Folsom Prison Blues,” “Ring of Fire,” “’Big River” and “Cry Cry Cry.” They happened upon their sound almost accidentally when Marshall and Luther, who were both mechanics in Memphis, were introduced to Johnny by his brother, Roy Cash. Since all three of them couldn’t play rhythm guitar, Luther borrowed a Fender Telecaster and Marshall bought a Kay bass. From there, their sound evolved.
According to Rosanne Cash “There was none of that ‘boom chicka boom’ without Marshall. You can’t separate the three of them at that point when it all started. It was one thing. You know, they’re united again, the three of them.”
Rosanne spent the last days of Marshall’s life with him in Arkansas. They had reconnected last Wednesday during rehearsals for a Johnny Cash Festival appearance that served as a fundraiser to help restore Cash’s childhood home in Dyess. Marshall fell ill and the Johnny Cash Festival was held without him, attracting George Jones and Kris Kristofferson. She says Marshall’s contribution to her dad’s success is undeniable.
Marshall played bass with Johnny Cash until 1980. He then began a career in management, handling The Statler Brothers until they retired in 2002 and later writing the autobiography I Was There When It Happened. He and Luther Perkins were among the first inductees into the Musicians Hall of Fame in Nashville in 2007.

Glasgow's Irish weekend

This year’s Highland Radio invasion of Scotland takes place over the weekend of September 16-18th. Each year, the Donegal radio station brings several busloads of listeners from Letterkenny & Derry over to Glasgow’s Crowne Plaza Hotel, down by the SECC, with some of Ireland’s top Country stars.
There are concerts at the hotel on Friday & Saturday nights and a dance on the Sunday.
This year’s entertainment comes from Brendan Quinn, who’ll have his new album, “Gotta Get To You” released by his visit, Lisa McHugh, Mike Denver, Frank McCaffrey, Louise Morrissey, and newcomer Derek Ryan will be there on the Friday night only.
The weekend will be a homecoming for Glasgow girl, Lisa McHugh, who now lives in the Highland Radio area. Lisa has appeared as a special guest in recent years, but this is the first year that she’s officially been on the bill. Lisa has a new single just released, “Court Of Love”.
Glasgow folk can join the fun, with tickets for individual nights vailable from the hotel closer to the event.

The Winchester, VA., home where Patsy Cline lived before becoming a country star opens for public tours Tuesday (Aug. 2). Cline lived with her mother and two siblings at the house at 608 S. Kent St. from November 1948, following her parents' separation, through June 1957, except for a period during her first marriage.
The modest home was purchased by a local nonprofit organization, Celebrating Patsy Cline Inc., which spent about $100,000 on renovations.

Shania Twain had a busy week in Nashville, announcing her comeback then coming down to earth with a mighty fall.
She will return to the stage with a two-year residency at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. She's scheduled to perform 60 shows per year beginning Dec. 1, 2012.
Twain last toured in 2003-2004, promoting her album, Up!, released in 2002.
Meanwhile, on the CMT Video awards, Shania entered by falling in the aisles amongst the audience. She told her fams in a videocast later that she was Ok, and would auction the shoes that caused her to topple.

The Canadian Country Music Association have announced that Scots born Johnny Reid is the recipient of the 2011 CCMA Humanitarian Award. Established in 1989, the CCMA Humanitarian Award recognizes outstanding Canadian country artists whose humanitarian contributions have positively enhanced the social fabric of Canada.
The CCMA Humanitarian Award will be presented to Mr. Reid at a private industry event during Country Music Week 2011 to be held in Hamilton, ON September 9-12.
Since the early days of his music career, Reid has been at the forefront of fundraising and social awareness events for organizations such as the World Vision Foundation, Children's Aid Foundation and the Make A Wish Foundation of Canada, among many others. He performs regularly at benefit concerts in support of humanitarian causes and will participate in the upcoming Slave Lake Benefit Concert on June 15th in support of those who lost their homes in last month's wildfires.
"I am both humbled and honoured to receive this award on behalf of all of us who strive to offer hope and love to those who need it the most," said 2011 Humanitarian Award recipient Johnny Reid.
As the reigning Fans' Choice Award winner, Johnny Reid is sure to have everyone on their feet during his live performance at Copps Coliseum, in Hamilton, Ontario on Monday, September 12.

Rankins return

Canadian family bad The Rankin Family are back with a new album, "These Are The Moments" on the Western Songs label.
The popular family group had not played together since brother John Morris was killed in a car crash in 2000. Whilst the surviving members all continued solo projects, they eventually reunited in 2007 for a cross-Canada tour. Such was the reaction, that they were persuaded to return to the studio, and this album was released in Canada in 2009.
The album, with six new songs, and remixes of old favourites like "Rise Again" and "Fare Thee Well Love", has now been released in the UK.

Mel McDaniel, 68, the husky-voiced country music singer-songwriter who had a No. 1 hit with "Baby's Got Her Blue Jeans On," died of lung cancer March 31st at his home in Hendersonville.
McDaniel's other hits, most in the early and mid-1980s, included "Louisiana Saturday Night," ''Stand Up," "Big Ole Brew" and "Let It Roll (Let It Rock)."
McDaniel was a regular performer on the Grand Ole Opry beginning in 1986. He also wrote "The Grandest Lady of Them All" for Conway Twitty, which is used as the Opry's theme song on broadcasts from the country music show in Nashville.
He also wrote "Goodbye Marie" for Kenny Rogers and "Roll Your Own," which was recorded by Hoyt Axton, Commander Cody and others.
Born in 1942 in Checotah, Okla., McDaniel sang for oil field workers in Alaska in the 1970s and made a living pumping gas before finding success in Nashville.

Meanwhile , prolific songwriter Harley Allen, 55, who wrote country music hits for Alan Jackson, John Michael Montgomery, Ricky Skaggs and others, died of cancer Wednesday at his home in Brentwood, Tenn.
Allen, the son of bluegrass singer Red Allen, was born in 1956 and reared in Dayton, Ohio. As a teenager, he performed in a bluegrass band with his brothers Greg, Neal and Ronnie while developing his songwriting craft.
Among the songs he wrote or co-wrote were "Between the Devil and Me," which Jackson took to No. 1; "Little Girl," a No. 1 hit for John Michael Montgomery; "I'll Wait for You," which Joe Nichols sang at Anna Nicole Smith's funeral; "Baby," a top 10 hit for Blake Shelton; "Simple Life," for Ricky Skaggs; and "High Sierra," recorded by the trio of Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt.
Allen won two Grammy Awards for singing harmonies with the Soggy Bottom Boys on "I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow," part of the successful "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" d
soundtrack album.

Canada and the Canadian music community have lost a legend. Terry Sumsion of Harley, Ontario passed away on Saturday, March 26, 2011 at the age of 64, following a three-year battle with esophageal cancer.
Terry's name and music are known in Canada and Europe. Playing to sell-out audiences up until early this year, Terry's hearty sense of humor and strong rapport with his friends and fans, new or old always created a relaxed and enjoyable entertainment experience. Terry was best known for hits like "Our Lovin' Place" and "Midnight Invitation".
Over the past year Terry accomplished two major goals that were important in his life - his treasured tour bus and his final CD ("Encore") released just last week.
Terry Sumsion, the songwriter and musician, was a Canadian treasure.

Ferlin Eugene Husky passed away on March 17, 2011 from cardiac problems in the Critical Care unit of a Nashville-area hospital where he had been under intensive care for several days. He was an singer who became well-known as a chart-topper under various names, including Terry Preston and Simon Crum. In the 1950s and 60s, Husky had several hits, including "Gone" and "Wings of a Dove", each reaching number one on the country charts. In 2010, he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.
Ferlin Husky was born in Flat River, Missouri on December 3rd 1925. As s a Merchant Marine, he entertained the troops on his ship in World War II. His official website states that his ship participated in the D-Day invasion of Cherbourg. After the war, Husky became a DJ in Missouri and Bakersfield, California, where he began using the moniker Terry Preston to hide his rural roots. As a honky tonk singer, Husky signed with Capitol Records in 1953 under the guidance of Cliffie Stone, also the manager for Tennessee Ernie Ford. With Capitol Records, he reverted to his given name. A few singles failed before "A Dear John Letter" with Jean Shepard became a No. 1 hit. The follow up was called "Forgive Me John".
In 1955, Husky had a solo hit with "I Feel Better All Over (More Than Anywheres Else)"/"Little Tom", and developed "Simon Crum" as a comic alter ego. As Crum, Husky signed a separate contract with Capitol Records and began releasing records, the biggest of which was 1959's "Country Music Is Here To Stay".
In the late 1950s, Husky had a long string of hits, including the No. 1 "Gone"; in 1957 . He had earlier recorded the song as Terry Preston in 1952, but the earlier version lacked the strings and backup singers of the newly-emerging Nashville sound. "Gone" was a crossover success, also reaching No. 4 on the pop music chart. It sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc. He then began an acting career, appearing on the Kraft Television Theatre program, and in the film Mr. Rock & Roll . His website states he has had bit parts in 18 films. Bob Ferguson's "Wings of a Dove" became his biggest hit in 1960, topping the country charts for ten weeks and attaining No. 12 on the pop chart. Husky was also known for his ability to mimic other popular country singers.
He briefly retired in 1977 following heart surgery but resumed touring. He remained a popular concert draw, performing at the Grand Ole Opry and elsewhere. Husky has suffered from heart problems for many years and was hospitalized several times since the late 1970s. , most recently for heart surgery in 2005 and blood clots in his legs in 2007. On January 16, 2011, Husky was honored at West St. Francois County High School in Leadwood, MO where local singers and the high school choir sang some of his hits. Husky also donated several items of memorabilia, including his country music hall of fame award, to the city of Leadwood. Glasgow's LISA McHUGH, who has moved to Ireland where she's making a name for herself on the Country scene, is coming home for aspecial Benefit Dance at The LomondSuite @ Hampden Park on Saturday April 2nd, featuring her band and Norman Borland.
Lisa lost a cousin at the turn off the year, at the age of 32. He had recently emigrated to Australia to start a new life with his wife, and two young boys. Shortly after they settled there, he sadly took ill on Hogmanay, and passed away shortly after. His family have now came home to Glasgow, and the dance is a benefit to support them as they try to rebuild their lives.

Jewel and baby Ok after collision

Singer Jewel and her unborn baby escaped injury after her vehicle collided with a fire truck near Stephenville, Texas, on Friday morning (March 11), according to the Stephenville Empire-Tribune newspaper. The singer was taken to the hospital,but medical tests indicate that she and the baby are doing fine. The fire truck was responding to a grass fire in the rural area when it collided into the passenger side of Jewel's SUV. Jewel and her husband, rodeo champion Ty Murray, are expecting a boy.

Reba McEntire, Bobby Braddock and Jean Shepard were named today as the 2011 inductees into the Country Music Hall of Fame.
Braddock, 70, was named in the new songwriters category. He has written songs, including He Stopped Loving Her Today, D-I-V-O-R-C-E, Golden Ring, I Wanna Talk About Me, Time Marches On and People Are Crazy. Braddock also discovered Blake Shelton and has produced his albums. He also was the piano player for Martin Robbins, starting in 1965.
Shepard had a slew of hits including A Satisfied Mind with Ferlin Husky. Her first hit, A Dear John Letter, a 1953 duet with Husky, was the first post-World War II record by a woman country artist to sell more than a million copies. The song stayed number one for six weeks and was the only chart topper of her entire career on the Billboard chart. Shepard, 77, had 45 charted hits between 1953 and 1978 and has been a member of the Grand Ole Opry for more than 50 years.
Reba was not present because she was in Tulsa, Okla. where her father fell into a coma and was in a hospital.
The announcement was made Tuesday morning in Nashville in a webcast. Induction will be later this year during a medallion ceremony

Opry loses two

This morning country legend and Hall of Fame member Charlie Louvin passed away at the age of 83. He had been battling pancreatic cancer.
But this amazing man was still recording and performing. His latest album, "The Battles Rages On" was released at the end of last year.
Charlie, who with his brother Ira formed one of country music's best-loved brother duos, The Louvin Brothers, in the mid-'50s and featuring Charlie on guitar and lead vocals, while Ira played mandolin and handled high tenor harmonies, The Louvin Brothers scored a number of hits like Cash On The Barrelhead, I Don't Believe You've Met My Baby and If I Could Only Win Your Love.
The latter song was a breakthrough hit in 1975 for singer Emmylou Harris, whilst The Byrds, Elvis Costello and Uncle Tupelo are just some of the rock artists who cite The Louvin Brothers as an influence.
The duo broke up in 1963, and Ira died in a car accident two years later. But Charlie continued to record, and hit the charts with the singles I Don't Love You Anymore, Hey Daddy, Off And On and I Think I'll Go Somewhere And Cry Myself To Sleep.

Louvin's death comes days after MARGARET WHITING, a singer who sold millions of records herself in the 1940s and 1950’s passed away at her home in New Jersey. She was 86. her hits included "Moonlight in Vermont" and "It Might as Well Be Spring.”
Whiting was an ‘honorary’ member of the GRAND OLE OPRY, as Capitol Records paired her up with singing cowboy JIMMY WAKELY for Country hits such as 1949’s “I’ll Never Slip Around Again,” and “Broken-Down Merry-Go-Round.”

Australian bluegrass picker heading home

Stirling born INNES CAMPBELL continues to make a name for himself down under. He, and his band had a busy time at Tamworth last week. At the Bluegrass Championships, the band managed to get a first or a second place in every category - George won the fiddle and was second in banjo, Mick came second in mandolin and Innes managed to get second in guitar.
The former St.Moden's pupil is returning home in the summer playing at The Hebridean Celtic Festival in Lewis, and the Guildtown Bluegrass Festival in Perthshire.

KASEY Chambers has dominated country music's night of nights taking home four Golden Guitars including Female Artist of the Year at the Country Music Awards of Australia.
Chambers won Single of the Year and APRA Song of the Year for Little Bird from her 2010 album of the same name at the awards ceremony tonight.
Her fourth award from seven nominations was for Love Like A Hurricane with Kevin Bennett in the Vocal Collaboration of the Year category, putting Chambers's Golden Guitar total at 12.
ARIA Award-winning country artist Graeme Connors took out the title of Male Artist of the Year for the track A Good Life from the album Still Walking which won Album of the Year.

Bandleader Ric Blair and his renowned Irish group, the Celts, premiered A Celtic Christmas at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium on Monday night (Dec. 13). The event featured Irish and Scottish Christmas carols dating from as far back as the 12th century along with modern favorites performed with Irish instrumentation. Tim O'Brien -- founding member of the bluegrass band, Hot Rize -- opened the evening and played mandolin with the Celts. Other special guests and features included readings from the Glaswegian Bible, Irish whistle and pipes by Eric Rigler ("My Heart Will Go On" from Titanic) and Ivan Goff (Riverdance and Lord of the Dance), Altan vocals and Irish fiddling by Mauread Ni Mhaonaigh, dancing by the Nashville Irish Step Dancers and a performance of John Lennon's "Happy Christmas (War Is Over)" by the H2O Praiz Children's Choir.

Shania gets wed

Shania Twain has married Frederic Thiebaud, an executive with Nestlé, the Swiss-based food and beverage corporation. They were married in Puerto Rico on New Years Day.
In August 2009, Twain confirmed she was dating Thiebaud after her divorce from record producer Robert "Mutt" Lange, who allegedly had an affair with Thiebaud's wife, Marie-Anne Thiebaud. Media reports indicated the singer had been a close friend of Marie-Anne Thiebaud, who managed Twain and Lange's chateau in Switzerland. Twain and Lange were married 14 years and have a 9-year-old son, Eja. People magazine reports that Thiebaud, 40, presented Twain, 45, with a three-carat solitaire diamond ring. Twain's autobiography will be published this spring and will also be featured in an upcoming series on Oprah Winfrey's television network.

Congratulations to Eunice Moran, who won Irish Gealic TV station TG4's Glor Tire competition last night. 21 year old Eunice, from Ballaghaderreen in County Roscommon, beat off strong competition from established acts Joe Moore and Phillip English in the final to be crowned Ireland's new Country Voice.
Throughout the series, the performing arts graduate was mentored by Mike Denver.

Popular singer & broadcaster Jackie Storrar, who has had a scare with cancer this year, is raising funds for local Maggies charity in Fife,and Breakthrough Breast Cancer by releasing a new single, and performing two hometown gigs this month.
“In 2004 I wrote a song called “My Angel” as a tribute to British TV Presenter Caron Keating who died of breast cancer", Jackie says on her website. "Caron was a great believer in Angels. Little did I know then that 6 years later I would be fighting for my own life with the same disease. The song has been sitting in a folder for all these years waiting on the right moment to be recorded. I didn’t think it would ever see the light of day, but after my own recent battle, now seems the right time!”

Scots born Johnny Reid is Canada's favourite

For the second year, Lanarkshire born Johnny Reid was voted the Fans Choice at the Canadian Country Music Awards. Johnny, whose latest single , "Today I'm Gonna Try And Change the World" features the bagpipes, also had the biggest selling Canadian Country album for the second consecutive year, and was awarded Single and Songwriter of the year accolades as well.
But it wasn't all Johnny. Albertan Gord Bamford won 3 awards, and Victoria Banks , who shared the songwriting award with Reid, won Female Vocalist.

Caithness Festival line up announced

The Northern Nashville Country Music Festival have announced the initial line up for the Easter 2011 Festival. The event, held at the Halkirk Riding Centre, sees the return of previous visitors Gail Davies and Highway 101, as well as an array of Texan performers, Ron Williams, Landon Dodd, Tony Booth and Justin Trevino. The festival will also see Gene Watson visit Scotland.
Irish favourite Dominic Kirwan will also be appearing, alongside Canadian band South Mountain.
The festival will be held April 22nd-24th and tickets will be on sale soon.

Miranda Lambert, who has yet to win a CMA Award, has already made history as the female with the most nominations in a single year at this year's CMA Awards.
When the final nominees were announced this week, Lambert led the list with nine nominations, including her first for the CMA's top award -- entertainer of the year. Lady Antebellum received five CMA nominations, including entertainer of the year, vocal group and album, single and song of the year for "Need You Now."
